Consumers would be able to turn off social media algorithms under legislation proposed in Australia, BBC Reports. Tech firms like Meta, Google and TikTok should face “substantial
penalties” if they do not give the option to turn off algorithms,” says Communications Minister Anika Wells, who steered the country’s social media ban for people under 16.
Wells adds that the new legislation would ensure “some basic safety protections on an industry that hasn’t had to observe it.”
